I've now placed a piece of photographic film in front of my camera lens. According to the article I posted earlier it's better to use film that has been exposed, but I could only find un-exposed film. It doesn't filter as much of the visible light, but at least it's not absorbing much of the infrared. So now I don't have to worry as much about background light in the room when I play!

Still need to mod my cam, thought I would try the floppy disk first. That is what viper used in his tutorial on youtube. I have my hat now, so it's just a matter of getting everything set up.
Cya on the track.

What is the purpose of the filter? to let only infra red pass ?
Well then go to he recycle park grab an defect VCR, DVD player or television, smash it at you have a perfect working IR filter. You now the red plastic were you aim with your Ir transmitter to.
That should work perfectly I think.

That's a great idea Hanzi! Hadn't thought of that. Yes, the purpose is to filter out the normal visible light. If you don't do this, the software will have problems with separating the LEDs from the other light sources. (reflections from headphones, lamps, +++)

I got the cam modded, but FT is freezing up every time I hit the start button. Plus, the head is upside down, and barely moves when I move my head. I have a completely black screen with only 3 dots. Guess I have more to figure out.

Hm... that's weird. When you press "start" in freetrack, do you see three crosses in the black part of the screen? That's necessary. Here are my settings:

Yes, I see 3 crosses on the 3 red dots, although my dots are bigger than what your picture shows. Is my threshold setting?
When I click start I get the black screen with 3 red dots like yours, but the skull is inverted, plus even though I click on 3 Point Cap, I am not getting any green dots in the bottom right corner which shows that everything is ok. I'm not getting anything for fps or jitter either. There has to be something I'm missing, just don't know what yet.
By the way, in order to close FT I usually have to open task manager and kill it. FT freezes up after I hit the start button.

That is very weird indeed.. :/ However you could try downloading the newest version, v2.2, which was released yesterday. It will be a separate install (it won't overwrite your current version), so it won't hurt to try. It's quite different and a little more complicated to set up I think, but it would be worth a try.

Sorry Gnomie, I didn't see you ask me about FreeTrack until I was watching the replay of qualify practice. I'm getting there. I closed a few programs that were running in the system tray, and my laggy & freezing problem went away. I still need to fine tune things and figure a way to block more light behind me. I have a window right in the sight of the cam. Maybe if I close the blinds it will be enough. And that's where I'm at so far. I'm still a long way from using it during an official race, especially with the BF1. I'm afraid FT would be too distracting until I get used to it.

OK! Good luck tweaking the settings. You could try adjusting the webcamera's contrast / balance and all those things too -- I found that it helped a lot for removing unwanted background noise. (I have a picture frame right behind me which reflects light from the window, but this is not a problem anymore)

@hanzi : Yup, I put a piece of floppy disk over the front of the camera to block the light. gnomie : I'll have to try that. I haven't done anything to the contrast/balance yet.
